Car Of The Day: January 19, 2011

Today's car of the day is Maisto's 2001 Cadillac Vizon concept.

Like the Imaj before it, the Cadillac Vizon blurs the lines between sport sedan, SUV, and wagon in a versatile, all-wheel-drive vehicle. Its crisp-lined styling bears the the "art and science" signature seen on the Evoq roadster and to a lesser degree on the 2002 Escalade.

The CAD-crisp Vizon fits squarely into the luxury performance wagon segment with a 119-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 190 inches -- sized just within the crucial five-meter limit needed to permit worldwide distribution.

Maisto did most of General Motors' concept cars in the late '90s and early '00s.  A lot of interesting cars came out of that series, though I'd have much preferred production vehicles.

The Vizon is powered by a 4.2-liter V-8 Northstar engine with a five-speed automatic transmission. Prepared for varied driving conditions, the Vizon features the first all-wheel-drive StabiliTrak application. Further, the suspension height can be adjusted for different road and load conditions.

As the engine starts, a sliding cover on the instrument panel opens to reveal a reconfigurable three-panel instrument display, which allows the driver to choose how and where data about the car is displayed.
The Vizon's four-passenger interior features leather seating with integrated heating and cooling, for comfort in all climates. Passengers can enjoy infotainment from an integrated DVD player and rear video screens.

The center console extends the length of the vehicle's interior, forming a long box for skis and other activity cargo. This console also supports the front seating, eliminating space-consuming rails from the floor under the seats.

On the highway, an advanced cruise control system monitors traffic ahead and automatically adjusts the car's speed to maintain a safe following distance. When the obstruction clears, the Vizon resumes its set cruising speed. Further assistance is available from the latest version of the OnStar Virtual Advisor, which offers turn-by-turn navigation and concierge services through a satellite speaker phone.

A showpiece of styling and technology, the Vizon is a sign of things to come from Cadillac.
